Mrs. Claus arrives in America twenty five years after the arrival of the jolly St. Nick in Clement Clarke Moore's Twas The Night Before Christmas. There are dozens of stories from 1849 to the present day that present her story. Many of these are cited or reprinted in Wondrous Mrs. Claus.
The book is a full color art gift book with images on every page. The images of Mrs. Claus were found in vintage magazines, books and on postcards. Many of the images were also sources through rare newspapers from the second half of the nineteenth century.

Wondrous Mrs. Claus brings to life the timeless Christmas character through dozens of stories and images.
Media Release: Pamela McColl’s Wondrous Mrs. Claus, to be released on September 20, 2025, is the first publication to present an extensive chronicle of the Christmas character kindred spirit to Santa Claus - Mrs. Claus. Mrs. Claus has been part of Christmas literature for two centuries and the author’s literary sleuthing endeavor located dozens of all-but-lost poems, stories and vintage images that are shared in the new publication.
What inspired you to research the literary and illustration record of Mrs. Claus? “I became intrigued by the character of Mrs. Claus while working on my book Twas The Night – The Art and History of the Classic Christmas Poem (2023) and on discovering that many of the early stories of Mrs. Claus’ were all but forgotten. The stories are delightful and are important to the development of the character.” McColl
Where you surprised by the stories you discovered about Mrs. Claus?
“The stories and images I found in nineteenth-century magazines and other publications present various names, descriptions and adventures for the character. Writers and illustrators used a great deal of poetic license with Mrs. Claus. The early stories that describe the character’s charitable nature and portray her on solo sleighride visits to families in need were the most surprising. It was also surprising to discover the number of stories and poems that placed Mrs. Claus in the women’s suffrage movement.” McColl
What is it about the character that you found most fascinating?
“It would be the diverse way in which she has been presented over the past two centuries. My goal is that my new book will increase appreciation for this compassionate and adventurous heroine and role model for the ages.” McColl
