Favorite book 2024. Elizabeth Custer’s Boots and Saddles: Or Life in Dakota with General Custer.  Her writing was praised by Mark Twain, who arranging for her to be published by Websters. The chapter on the Dakota winter storms are beautifully written. She mentions her husband dressing up at Christmas as Santa. 

In correspondence Mrs.Claus discovered a conversation that took place between Elizabeth Custer and Robert Louis Stevenson that took place over a dinner. Mrs.Custer asked Stevenson to write women characters into his stories. Taking her recommendation Stevenson did add women to his works from that point on.
